Under House Bill 246, eligible construction employers working on commercial projects are required to use the federal E-Verify system to confirm the work status of every newly hired worker. View the full law here.
Failing to comply with this law will result in a $250 penalty for the first offense and $1,000 for a second offense within three years. Any subsequent violations may incur a penalty of $1,500 each. Additionally, knowingly hiring unauthorized workers may result in the permanent revocation of a license.
Continuing to employ a worker after non-confirmation can result in more significant penalties, with fees ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 per violation.
